The CPI(M) blocked the crossing of Chittaranjan Avenue which connects north Kolkata with the heart of the city and Mahatma Gandhi Road that leads to Howrah railway station.
The blockade led to a clash between CPI(M) activists and policemen who tried to disperse the agitators and clear the roads for normal vehicular movement, police said.
Altogether 111 demonstrators, including 31 women, were arrested and all of them were released later on personal bonds, an official at the Kolkata Police Headquarter said.
CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty, who was leading the demonstration, alleged that the goons of the ruling TMC had assaulted party worker Debaprasad Das and his wife Usha and then set their house afire at Kachharabari locality of Kakdwip on the night before the panchayat election was held.
Sundarbans Affairs Minister and local Trinamool MLA Manturam Pakhira had denied the charge earlier.
Chakraborty demanded the bodies be handed over to them and an immediate police action be taken against the culprits.
The incident was reported at the local police station under Sundarbans Coastal police district and forensic experts have visited the spot, police said.
The police later said that the bodies have been already handed over to the relatives of the deceased.
