Medchal (Telangana) [India], Nov 24 (ANI): United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Friday asserted that it was the Congress which formed the State of Telangana despite the political loss which the party had to face due to this decision.
She was addressing her first public rally after the formation of Telangana, at Medchal in outskirts of Hyderabad.
In her speech, she targeted the incumbent TRS regime alleging that it has done nothing substantial for the State and its leaders have filled their own pockets.
"It is really unfortunate that soon after its formation, the State landed into the hands of those who cared only about themselves and their close aides. Telangana has not progressed in the manner it should have," said Sonia.
"The Congress realised the people's dream of Telangana and had paid the price for it. We faced the political setback due to our decision but we cared for the aspirations of people," said Sonia Gandhi.
She further added that the Congress simultaneously cared for the sentiments of the people of Andhra Pradesh and is still committed towards giving the State the special status it deserves.
She said that Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) government led by K. Chandrashekhar Rao has ruined the state and has deliberately stopped all the popular schemes of the Congress government including MNREGA.
"TRS government has destroyed the self-help women groups which once flourished in the region. They have done nothing for tribal, backwards, minorities, women and other sections of society," she said.
She urged people to vote for the Congress in the ensuing Assembly elections so that State under the grand old party's leadership can embark on its journey of development and all-round progress.
The Telangana Assembly elections are scheduled to be held on December 7 to elect representatives of 119 constituencies. The counting of votes will take place on December 11. (ANI)
