Mumbai, Oct 16 (PTI) A charitable trust moved Tuesday the Bombay High Court seeking a preliminary inquiry into all allegations of sexual harassment at work places, surfacing as part of the #MeToo movement.
The plea by city-based Narsima Charitable Trust sought the court's directions to the Maharashtra government and police to hold prompt preliminary probes into all the #MeToo allegations, surfacing on social media.
The Trust's plea was filed by advocate Sunny Punamia.
The #MeToo movement has taken the social media by storm with women from various fields openly narrating the old instances of sexual harassment and naming their tormentors.
Punamia said the plea would be mentioned Wednesday before a high court bench for urgent hearing.
It is likely to be taken up for hearing later this week.
The plea has made the state government, the police and the Press Council of India, among others, parties to the case.
An old Supreme Court judgement mandates police to promptly initiate a preliminary inquiry into the complaints of sexual harassment at work place, the petition filed by the Trust said.
The police are bound to register an FIR as per the mandate of the apex court's verdict, the Trust argued in the petition.
Punamia has sought direction to the police to abide by the SC judgement and launch probe into all the #MeToo complaints.
He has also sought a direction to the press to ensure that all news reports on the complaints or declarations made by the victims of sexual harassment as part of the movement are "fair."
