Mumbai, May 3: A bus of the state-run Bombay Electronic and Transport System (BEST) went up in flames while commuting passengers in Goregaon. Those onboard had a narrow escape as they alighted the vehicle moments before the fire erupted. Apart from commuters, the bus driver and conductor have also been reported safe.

The incident was reported at 7:20am on Friday, near the Gokuldham market in Goregaon. The bus was on route number 646, ferrying commuters from Goregaon Station East to Nagri Niwara Prakalp No. 1 & 2. 7 Dead, 34 Injured After Bus Rams Into Truck on Agra-Lucknow Expressway

A total of three passengers were on board, confirmed BEST spokesperson BA Zodage. They heard a loud sound emanating from the CNG gas tank of the bus. Subsequently, they alerted the driver and conductor -- who decided to evacuate the immediately.

No sooner did they stepped out, flames began to erupt from the vehicle. The fire was quickly doused off, but it ended damaging a major portion of the bus. The semi-charred vehicle was towed to to the Dindoshi depot, a BEST official said, adding that an inquiry will be conducted.
